The Foundation

On 15 July 2021, the non-profit Baumeister Foundation for Equal Opportunities was established as the sixth trust foundation under the umbrella of the University of Bremen Foundation. The foundation aims to contribute to equal opportunities and the reduction of structural disadvantages, in particular due to gender, socio-economic background and age.

The purpose of the foundation is to promote science and research at Bremen's universities with a particular focus on equal opportunities for men and women. The aim is to support and promote female students and young academics, especially those with more difficult circumstances (e.g. parenting and caring responsibilities, second-chance education and/or older age), but also those students who are the first in their family to study.

In addition, research and teaching are to be supported, particularly in the areas of 'gender', the future of work' and 'social security'.

The Baumeister Foundation for Equal Opportunities was established as a so-called hybrid foundation. A quarter of the initial capital was invested as an endowment fund, which can be utilised within ten years. This ensures that the foundation is able to award grants in the first few years of its existence and can therefore meet the current high demand for funding, even if interest income is hardly achievable at present. At the same time, donations are very welcome in order to be able to support as many interested parties as possible.

The Board of Trustees decides on the use of the funds.

The members of the Board of Trustees of the Baumeister Foundation for Equal Opportunities are

- the founder, Dr Hella Baumeister

- the Rector of the University of Bremen, Prof Dr Jutta Günther

- Prof Dr Karin Gottschall, SOCIUM University of Bremen

- Dr Marion Salot, Bremen Chamber of Employees

Die Stifter

Dr Hella Baumeister completed a degree in law and social sciences at the University of Bremen in the mid-1970s after completing vocational training in the hospitality industry and working for many years in the hotel/travel agency sector in Berlin and Bremen. She then worked for a total of ten years as a social science assistant in various research projects at the University of Bremen, focusing on labour market and qualification research. From 1991 to 2006, Dr Hella Baumeister worked as a consultant for labour market and employment policy at the Bremen Chamber of Employees. During this time, she was invited several times by various parties as an individual expert to public hearings on labour market policy legislation in the Bundestag. For many years, she was a member of the Employees' Bank on the Administrative Committee of the Bremen Employment Agency and on the Vocational Training Committee of the Bremen Chamber of Commerce.

She then worked as a freelance consultant on various labour market policy issues until 2019. The gender-specific view of the unequal distribution of labour market opportunities and risks was particularly important to her. She has been involved on a voluntary basis in projects, initiatives, committees and working groups in the field of 'women's education work', sponsored by political parties, trade unions, state women's councils and the Protestant Church at state and national level, among others.

Bernhard Baumeister is a technical business economist and has worked for many years in Berlin and Bremen housing associations, most recently in Bremen's largest housing association GEWOBA. As Chairman of the Works Council and Deputy Chairman of the Supervisory Board, he was actively involved in the regionalisation of Neue Heimat Bremen into GEWOBA. From 1993, he was responsible for technical and commercial housing management in the Bremen-Vahr district as head of department at GEWOBA.

He was also chairman of the HBV (trade, banking and insurance) trade union in Bremen for many years and a member of the HBV trade union committee at federal level, the highest body between trade union conferences every four years. From 1988 to 1994, he was President of the Bremen Chamber of Employees. Since the end of his professional life, he has volunteered to accompany and support young trainees with difficult starting opportunities on their way to successfully completing their training.
