Award-winning PhD

Jonas completes his PhD with distinction

The entire AG Th?ming congratulates Jonas on the successful defence of his dissertation entitled “Online monitoring of fuel-range Fischer-Tropsch products via Atmospheric Pressure Chemical Ionization mass spectrometry”. He developed a method for the online monitoring of fuel-range Fischer-Tropsch products. He used the combined technology of Atmospheric Pressure Chemical Ionization (APCI) and mass spectrometry to analyse volatile and medium n-alkanes directly in the gas stream. His method overcomes the disadvantage of long measurement times with classic gas chromatography and delivers initial measurement results eight times faster. The analysis is carried out in the flow, without sample preparation or chromatographic separation - a breakthrough for real-time applications.

This research represents significant progress for process-related analysis in power-to-liquid plants. By monitoring Fischer-Tropsch products quickly and precisely, reaction parameters can be optimized in real time and fluctuations in the energy supply can be better absorbed. Jonas' work could therefore make a decisive contribution to increasing the efficiency of the overall process.
