DLR is the Federal Republic of Germany's national research centre for aerospace. Its extensive research and development work in aeronautics, space, transport and energy is integrated into national and international collaborations.
Independent research in the field of aerospace is based on systems engineering as well as analysis, which are intended to form an important milestone in the national and international high-tech sector. An essential task is the development of concepts for innovative space missions as well as space-based applications for scientific, commercial and safety-relevant needs as a guide for political decision-making processes.
For example, the Institute's scientists are developing technologies and concepts, which are linked to planetary landing missions. They create concepts, models as well as verifications of hardware suitability according to expected operating conditions and research technologies for transport and propulsion systems. On top of that, conception and analysis of carrier systems as well as the development of orbital and safety systems are also part of their activities, as is work on technologies for orbit and attitude control. In addition, highly reliable data management systems for spacecraft are developed.
It is precisely through synergies that a platform for future-oriented space research with a focus placed on "space systems" is to be created, thus bringing the vision to the mission.
