Elizabeth's experiences are just one example of how lively and diverse a semester abroad can be. The exchange program between the University of Bremen and the University of Nottingham not only opens up new academic perspectives for students, but also personal opportunities that often extend far beyond their studies.
Elizabeth Darcy, a student of German and Mandarin, took advantage of this opportunity and spent her semester abroad in Bremen. The aim of the program is to give students the opportunity to improve their language skills and gain valuable intercultural experience.
Despite cultural differences, Elizabeth quickly felt at home in Bremen and at Faculty 10. The orientation week at the beginning was particularly helpful: in addition to information events, there were city tours, an international cooking evening and many opportunities to meet new people.
Elizabeth also gained a lot from her studies. A seminar on Franz Kafka helped her hone her analytical and presentation skills. She also got involved with the campus cinema – a great opportunity to speak German and make new contacts.
Elizabeth particularly emphasizes the support provided by department staff:
I particularly liked how welcoming the staff of department 10 were with international students, they made a big effort to get everyone involved and helped if we were having any difficulties, it really made a difference in improving my German.
In her free time, she explored Bremen and other regions of Germany. She particularly remembers the festive atmosphere at the Bremen Christmas markets, for example.
Overall, the year abroad boosted her self-confidence, improved her organizational skills and gave her a deeper understanding of cultural differences.
