Asteroids and maps: How mathematicians saw the world 200 years ago

Lecture

17 March 2026, 9:30¨C10:30 a.m. and 11:00 a.m.¨C12:00 p.m.

200 years ago, the famous mathematicians Gauss, Olbers and Bessel wrote exciting letters to each other about new discoveries, strange celestial bodies and the measurement of the world. In this lecture, we will travel back in time to their era and discover how they lived and worked. We will look at how mathematics was used at that time to identify and correct measurement errors. And perhaps we will even meet a certain ¡®Mr Gauss¡¯ who can tell us personally what it was like to conduct research and make new discoveries back then.

This event is part of the Bremen ¡°Kinder-Uni¡± (University for Children).
