Consolidating roots in the city and region
Measures and examples of good practice in this field of action:
Bremen residents who would like to improve or refresh their foreign language skills will find an extensive range of intensive courses from Chinese to Spanish at the University Language Centre. During the lecture-free period (February/March and August/September), the Language Centre offers one to three-week language courses, which are open to all interested citizens and are also recognised as educational time. Information on the courses and registration can be found here.
The Foreign Language Centre is a joint institution of the University of Bremen, the Universities of Bremen and Bremerhaven and the University of the Arts.
Christmas lectures for the whole family
During the Advent season, the Physics and Chemistry departments invite you to their traditional Christmas lectures on campus. Entertaining shows for the whole family are presented with many impressive experiments. The scientists really let it rip: Glowing pickles, exploding chocolate kisses, plenty of fire and lots of smoke are designed to entertain visitors - and make them a little smarter at the same time.
The lectures could not take place during the pandemic years 2020 and 2021. As an alternative, the researchers produced a video advent calendar. The videos can be viewed on the university's YouTube page.
Vom Campus zum Wissenschaftsstadtteil
In its transfer strategy, the University of Bremen is committed to developing its campus and the entire University of Bremen Technology Park into an urban science district. Over 500 companies have now settled in the immediate vicinity of the university and, like the university, benefit from the short distances that make personal communication so much easier. The next major development step will be the expansion of the technology park, which will orientate the university and companies even more towards the city.
Understanding maths - cooperation between the university and Bremer Oberschule im Park
The University of Bremen and the Oberschule im Park in Bremen-Oslebshausen are cooperating in the project "Learning together by explaining with digital media". Pupils in years 5-7 create explanatory videos on topics from their maths lessons with the support of students from the university. Project manager Prof. Karsten D. Wolff emphasises the learning effect of creating the videos: "If you want to explain something, you have to have understood it." As the videos are group projects, creating them also promotes the pupils' social skills.
You can find a short video about the project here.
The project is funded by two trust foundations of the University of Bremen Foundation, the Karin and Heinz-Otto Peitgen Foundation and the Iris and Hartmut Jürgens Foundation.
In September 2019, the cooperation project was awarded the Education Innovation Prize by the "Die Sieben Faulen e.V." association.
Open Campus: The university invites you
Under the motto "Opening Worlds - Sharing Knowledge", the university invites all interested parties to visit the campus every two years - and more than 20,000 citizens accept this invitation! The programme is rich and varied - from the children's campus, laboratory tours and lectures to the big open-air closing concert. The next Open Campus will take place in 2021.
Information and lots of impressions can be found here.
If you don't want to wait until the next Open Campus, you can also get to know individual areas of the university at their respective open days, such as the Geosciences Collection.
