A large number of academics, company representatives and students accepted the invitation to a special academic ceremony on April 30, 2025: The inaugural lecture of the Chair of Retail and Logistics Management in the Department of Economics on the topic of “Logistics by and for people”.
After a welcoming address by the Dean of the Faculty of Business and Economics, Prof. Dr. Maik Eisenbei?, Senator Kristina Vogt emphasized in her address that logistics issues have always had a home and special significance in the commercial city of Bremen. “All sectors are important for the state, but logistics as a central hub for all flows of goods, especially in and around the ports in Bremen and Bremerhaven, has a very specific role and we expressly welcome the commitment of the University of Bremen and the Faculty of Business and Economics here.”
Prof. Dr. Michael Freitag, spokesperson for the Bremen research and transfer focus “Dynamics in Logistics”, picked up on this and explained the diverse references and collaborations across various players in the state of Bremen and also extended a warm welcome to the newly appointed chair holder Professor Klumpp on behalf of all network partners for logistics in Bremen. This reference was completed by the view of the economy, represented by Ms. Daniela Schmidt, member of the board of OHB SE Bremen. From this perspective, satellite technology, logistics and the human factor form an important link, particularly in Bremen, and create synergies between all players.
In his inaugural lecture, Professor Klumpp explained the special importance and attention that people have in logistics - the increasing use of technology with robotics and AI means that the role of employees in logistics is becoming increasingly important for companies in the context of monitoring and strategic tasks. Current logistics research, including at the Department of Economics at the University of Bremen, is making a significant contribution to this with experiments and excellent research into the issue of human-technology interaction. Examples of applications can be found in the Retail Logistics & Innovation Lab together with the REWE Group and the Universities of G?ttingen and TU Darmstadt, where, for example, working conditions in retail logistics are investigated and improved.
