FAQ: Opencast

Opencast for students

Error messages when using Opencast are usually caused by authentication issues.

If you want to watch a video, navigate to your Stud.IP courses and open the Opencast video there.
If you are not properly logged into Stud.IP, you will receive an error message when trying to open the video.
This can happen, for example, if you close your laptop and open it again later, as you may have been logged out due to a timeout.

In that case, log in to Stud.IP again and reopen the video as described above.

Logging in to Opencast at the University of Bremen happens automatically and only via a valid token from Stud.IP.
So if you see a login window in Opencast, please go back to Stud.IP, refresh the page, and open the video again from within the Stud.IP course.

Since the update of the Opencast plugin at the beginning of the summer semester, lecturers have the option to allow video uploads by students. However, this is not possible directly within the Opencast plugin in the course. Instead, an extra study group with the title of the course is created automatically. Unlike regular study groups, this one is semester-dependent.

Workflow:

(lecturers only: Course => Opencast Plugin => left navigation: Allow upload by students)
Via the left navigation, you can go directly to the associated Opencast study group: "To study group". It is also accessible via "My courses".
All participants of the course, including lecturers and tutors, are automatically enrolled in this Opencast study group. The Opencast tab is activated, and videos can be uploaded by all participants, or new videos can be produced using Opencast Studio.
Students who are marked as "invisible" cannot use the upload function, as they would otherwise become visible in the study group.
The left navigation in the study group also leads back to the corresponding course.

Opencast for lecturers

If you would like to transfer a series from a previous semester to your new course, you no longer need to request this from us.
After activating the Opencast plugin in the new course, simply select the option to link an existing series (from your own courses) instead of creating a new one.
If this does not work for you, please contact Opencast Support at opencastprotect me ?!elearning.uni-bremenprotect me ?!.de.

Use the left navigation in the study group to return to the corresponding course.

Unfortunately, this is no longer possible; this functionality was removed by the Opencast developers for various reasons. However, in some cases a rough estimate can be determined—please contact us at opencastprotect me ?!elearning.uni-bremenprotect me ?!.de.
