• 1970-71 Law Practice – in Ethiopia

• Lecturer in law - Makerere University in Uganda (1973-74); University of Nairobi, Kenya (1974–1975); the University of Khartoum, Sudan (1975-1980)

• Assistant Professor, New Hampshire College and Springfield College in Springfield, Mass., USA (1987-1988)

• Senior Research Fellow (Wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter), University of Bremen, FB 6 and FB 8. (since 1989)

• Seconded to the government of Namibia as Researcher on the laws of local government (1990) and as Constitutional law advisor to the Delimitations Commission (1991)

• Served as Africa expert for the ACP in Brussels twice –i.e. in 1992 and 1997

• Visiting Professor at the Free University of Brussels in 1992
