The potential of plants to vary their phenotype according to the environment may buffer species against the impacts of global environmental change. I am focussing on intraspecific trait variation within and among populations of temperate forest understorey herbs as a result of phenotypic plasticity or genetic diversity. These species may be especially threatened by environmental changes, since their migration rates are often low or hampered in contemporary, often highly fragmented landscapes. I am especially interested in the phenotypic response of European forest herbs to changes in climate using latitudinal gradient studies (FLEUR-network), greenhouse- and reciprocal transplant experiments.
