Becoming Aware of Ignorance and Contradiction

A central assumption of this project is that the philosophical themes of ignorance awareness and contradiction are closely related. Although it remains an open question how this relationship should be drawn, the project looks to provide a novel perspective that advances and connects contemporary research on ignorance (awareness) and contradiction. To achieve this end, the project adopts an interdisciplinary theoretical framework: from philosophy of science and epistemology, it draws on recent accounts of ignorance (awareness) and contradiction; from cognitive science it integrates models on epistemic feelings and metacognition; and from philosophy of mind, it integrates recent developments on inner speech, embodied cognition and situated affectivity. On this framework, rather than a theoretical achievement, awareness of ignorance is seen as a complex and embodied process, mediated by contradiction, and integrating cognitive and affective skill.

Thus, the project has two interconnected theoretical objectives. On the one hand, building an embodied and psychologically realistic account of the phenomenon of awareness of ignorance; on the other hand, connecting the topics of ignorance (awareness) and contradiction by paying special attention to scenarios where subjects experience contradictory beliefs or inconsistent information. Together, the project aims to answer the question of which psychological processes enable us to become aware of what we ignore, and what role does the experience of contradiction play in this process?
