Scientific Communication (for the non-native English speaker)

4th – 8th August 2025 at the University of Bremen plus two online sessions

together with our YUFE partners University of Rijeka, Croatia and the Nicolaus Copernicus University in Torun, Poland.

Modern science is extremely collaborative, and being able to communicate well, whether through writing, casual conversation or formal presentation, is essential for young researchers.

This course is aimed at students, from undergraduate to PhD level, who speak English as a second language, and want to build up their skills and confidence in international communication. The course will take place over a week in Bremen, Germany. The course will also include two online sessions: one before the week in Bremen and one after. Examples will be taken from the life sciences; enthusiastic students from other subjects are also welcome.

Programme and Application

Sessions will be introduced by the teacher (a native English speaker and scientist), followed by group-based tasks, in which students collaborate and complete various communication-based activities in English. In this way, students, from different countries and with different levels of ability, can support each other in the learning process.

The course builds up from simple, low stress activities at the beginning, up to full science-based presentations at the end, all conducted in a group environment. Assessment will be based on these final activities, and will focus on communication skills, as opposed to technical ability in the English language.
