Published in September 2025, the NomosHandbuch Hochschulforschung – Forschung über Hochschule und Wissenschaft (German-language only) has been released for the first time as a comprehensive open-access reference work that brings together current knowledge in higher education research. The volume includes a contribution by our DSC colleague Dr. Susanne de Vogel.
Together with Kolja Briedis and Gesche Brandt, Susanne de Vogel co-authored the chapter “Pr?-Docs und Promotion”. It provides a solid overview of key issues related to the doctoral phase, including access routes to doctoral studies, different models of doctoral training, debates around fixed-term employment and working conditions (#ichbinhanna), quality assurance, doctoral dropout, work–life balance and parenthood during the PhD, as well as trends in internationalization.
The contribution summarizes the current state of research in these areas while also outlining open questions and directions for future research. It is therefore relevant not only for scholars in higher education research, but also for doctoral candidates, higher education practitioners, and stakeholders in science and higher education policy.
The NomosHandbuch Hochschulforschung is edited by Peer Pasternack, Gabi Reinmann, and Christian Schneijderberg and brings together 60 contributions by 81 authors. Rather than a traditional edited volume, the handbook offers concise and structured overviews of research on topics such as research, teaching, studying, knowledge transfer, and universities as organizations. It is available both in print and as a fully open-access publication, funded by FIS Bildung.
The chapter reflects Susanne de Vogel’s long-standing expertise on qualification and employment conditions in academia and situates this perspective within a key reference work in higher education research, while also strengthening the DSC’s visibility in higher education and science policy debates.
