University of Bremen
WHY was the University of Bremen founded in 1971?
HERE’S WHY: The early 1970s were a time of renewal for the young Federal Republic of Germany. It was during this time of change that the University of Bremen was founded. As a reform university, it deliberately broke with some ideas of traditional university policy. With its pioneering spirit, it anticipated many developments that were in store for all German higher education institutions. For example: removing science from the ivory tower, responsibility for society, and research and learning across disciplinary boundaries. The commercial and industrial city of Bremen thus took a future-oriented step on the path towards becoming a city of knowledge.
WHY is the university important to society?
HERE’S WHY: Whether it’s the coronavirus crisis, social change, digitization, or climate change, with its research and teaching, the university provides important impulses for society. In this way, it not only plays a decisive role in shaping Bremen. It also contributes to leaving a livable planet for future generations. As a climate university, it is a strong advocate for climate and environmental science and is one of the world’s leading universities in this field.
