Strategies
The University of Bremen is working ‘on reliable structures, practices, and attitudes that support diversity and are anti-discriminatory. Together, we are creating an inclusive university where we treat each other with respect.’ (Mission Statement University of Bremen 2023) This is the basis of the university's actions.
Our values and objectives are based on the broad legal basis of the German Constitution, Article 3 (2) and (3), the General Act on Equal Treatment and the Bremen Higher Education Act.
In accordance with this legal mandate, the University of Bremen formulates and adopts its own strategies against discrimination and for an effective gender and diversity policy. The Diversity Strategy, the Inclusion Action Plan, the Anti-Discrimination Policy, the Equal Opportunities Concept for Parity at the University and the joint Equity, Diversity and Inclusivity Strategy of the YUFE Alliance are all brought together under the umbrella of the University of Bremen's mission statement, which was adopted in 2023 and includes the chapter ‘Realising Equal Opportunities and Countering Discrimination’. In addition, the University of Bremen has repeatedly and successfully participated in the Family-Friendly University Audit and the Diversity Audit ‘Shaping Diversity’ and is pursuing a Gender Equality Plan (GEP). The University of Bremen successfully participated in the BMBF's Women Professors' Programme for the fourth time and was awarded the title "University with Strong Gender Equality" in 2023 for its Equal Opportunities Concept for Parity. We see the strategy papers and concepts as a starting point, development process and framework for our work.
In order to support and further develop these processes, to review the university's strategies and to make effective progress together in the fields of gender equality, diversity and anti-discrimination at universities, the Equal Opportunities and Diversity Offices are represented in a wide range of committees and networks at the university, nationwide and at the European level:
