The EGU is one of the world’s largest and most diverse conferences in the field of geosciences. It provides a platform for researchers from around the globe to discuss current developments, interdisciplinary approaches, and societally relevant questions in the context of environment, climate, and Earth systems.

At the conference, Annika Nolte, one of our data scientists for environmental and marine sciences, contributed to the session EOS2.1 – “Open session on Teaching & Learning in Higher Education” with her presentation “Open Resources for Geoscience Data Science Training: Insights from the Data Competence Center DataNord”. At the heart of Annika’s talk was the question: How can we systematically and sustainably promote data literacy in the geosciences? She introduced the Geoscience x Data Science OER Guide – a freely accessible collection of metadata about where to find Open Educational Resources (OER) for research and teaching at the intersection of geoscience and data science, published on GitHub . The guide is aimed at researchers pursuing self-study, as well as educators and institutions looking to enhance the efficiency of their existing training programs.

In addition to her own contribution, Annika used the conference as an opportunity to network with other initiatives working to strengthen data literacy in geoscience research. She also explored current developments in machine learning and artificial intelligence – focusing particularly on their discipline-specific applications, challenges, and potentials. These insights will feed into both the support provided to researchers and the development of new training formats within the DataNord project.
