AI and Art: Panel Discussion at the Kunsthalle Bremen

Nobody can avoid AI these days. Recently, it can also be found in museums: the Dutch museum Mauritshuis temporarily replaced its masterpiece “The Girl with the Pearl Earring” by Jan Vermeer with an AI-generated painting in 2023.

In the context of AI and art, the Kunsthalle Bremen hosted a panel discussion on 22 October entitled “Ohne Holzschnitt keine KI. Künstliche Intelligenz und Bilder: Der Kampf um Vertrauen, Wahrheit und Deutungshoheit”, in which Rainer Malaka from our lab took part.

The question of what consequences, opportunities and challenges AI has for institutions and companies was explored. Can images still be trusted today? Does AI (already) belong in museum collections? What influence does AI have on the creative industry and up-and-coming artists?

Alongside Prof. Dr. Rainer Malaka (University of Bremen), Dr. Yvette Gerner (Radio Bremen), Prof. Dr. Christoph Grunenberg (Kunsthalle Bremen) and Dr. Pia Schreiber (digital agency construktiv) discussed the questions from moderator Pit Noack.

An inspiring debate on a very topical subject.
