Psychology, M.Sc.
The M.Sc. Psychology's program has a research-oriented profile with a focus on basic subjects of psychology. The participating research groups are characterized by a quantitative-experimental orientation and contribute their expertise in areas such as cognitive and neuropsychology, developmental and social psychology, and behavioral genetics. The study program provides advanced methodological training in psychometrics and change measurement as well as mathematical modeling. The research focus is complemented by selected subjects from applied psychology (for more information see Structure of Study program and Curriculum).

In the study program of the M.Sc Psychology students can earn a total of 120 credit points. The program is divided into a compulsory and an elective area and is completed in four semesters.
In the first two semesters the study program focuses on research methods and subjects from basic psychology, including content from cognitive psychology, decision psychology, developmental psychology, social psychology, behavioral genetics, research methods and advanced methodological training such as change measurement and mathematical modeling of cognitive processes.
This content is complemented by modules in selected areas of applied psychology. The applied modules consist of a module on clinical (neuro)psychology and a module allowing a specialization in applied cognitive psychology, applied social psychology or economic psychology. In addition, a freely selectable individual subject supplement allows students to set their own focus in the third semester.
Method and research training includes a research project module in which, after an introductory lab rotation into the various research areas of the research groups in the second semester, students develop their own research project under the supervision of one of the participating research groups in the third semester. In a scientific debate club, students learn to research a specific theoretical or methodological position and prepare to defend it (mindful of its strengths and weaknesses) against an antagonistic position.
The program includes an internship and ends with the master's thesis.
The aim of the master's program in psychology is that students acquire a heightened ability to evaluate cognitive, social and developmental psychological aspects in human experience and behavior, to reflect on these critically and to develop their own research questions. They acquire comprehensive skills in scientific methods and advanced knowledge in quantitative data analysis, diagnostics and evaluation.
They are thus particularly qualified to work in research-oriented institutions as well as to adequately select and utilize quantitative methods in applied areas and research fields of psychology.
Careers in all areas of psychology are open to graduates, including further training in psychotherapy via further institutional training (but not according to the new Psychotherapy Training Reform Act, cf. Approbationsordnung of 04.03.2020).
