Smart Tool - Intelligentes Werkzeug

Intelligentes Werkzeug

The aim of the project is to equip a conventional progressive stamping die with sensors to monitor process parameters such as cutting and bending forces, cutting speed as well as bending angles. In order to identify tool wear and defective components at an early stage in the production process, the sensor data is analyzed by a network attached microcomputer.

Project description

A progressive stamping die combines punching and forming processes in one tool, where the individual subsequent operations (punching, forming, cutting, etc.) take place at different stations. The component to be processed is guided by the tool with a carrier strip and transported to the next station with each punching stroke. Once the cycle is completed, the component is separated from the carrier strip.

During punching operation a worn punch can lead to the formation of excessive burrs and thus scrap components. By evaluating the cutting forces on the individual punches, the formation of these burrs can be recognized at an early stage. For this purpose, a punch with integrated sensors is being developed in the “Smart Tool” project, which is able to record the punching force and temperature directly inside the punch.

In addition, the use of a camera system is planned to record the bending angle during the bending process. An automatically readjusting calibration station is intended to enable continuous adjustment of the bending angle and therefore minimally faulty components.

All process parameters are supervised by a process control system and are made available in databases. The basic parameters of the tool (serial number, function, number of manufactured components, etc.) are saved in a tool specific profile and can be called up at any time via a wireless interface.
