UP Wing
UP Wing Ultra Performance Wing - Design and realization of a Stall Protection Sensor
As part of a project funded by the European Union to increase the energy efficiency of commercial aircraft, flow sensors will be integrated into wings. In order to meet the mechanical requirements in real flight operations, new measurement methods and manufacturing processes for thermal flow sensors will be tested. The project is coordinated by Airbus Operations GmbH.
Project description
To reduce the environmental footprint of commercial aircraft, the design of wings can be modified. The Ultra Performance Wing (UP Wing) project is making a significant contribution to reduce the fuel consumption by 30%.
However, optimization of the wing shape and the operating conditions, such as the angle of attack, can only be achieved if the critical limits of flying are pushed further. Therefore, the risk of flow separation on the wing must be considered.
IMSAS is designing a sensor to detect critical flow conditions at an early stage. With the information about the current state of the flow, an active system can influence the flow conditions with actuators in the wings and thereby ensure safe and efficient flight operations. Due to waterdrops, dust and ice, the sensor is exposed to harsh conditions. Additional advances in the novel sensor design are required to achieve the necessary robustness.
A total of 29 European partners are involved in the project over the period from 2023 to 2026.
The project is supported by the Clean Aviation Joint Undertaking (CAJU) and its members and is funded by the European Union. Project-ID: 101101974
