History of the University: Hobby Archivists Wanted

Grey. There is no way around this color stimulus, somewhere between black and white, when dealing with the documented history of the University of Bremen. The university archive is housed in the discreetly greying GW1, the oldest building of the university. The actual archive documents are stored in grey cardboard boxes, meticulously labeled and numbered consecutively. Grey are also the nuances in demand for the reappraisal of the history of the university, a history that has seen times of black-and-white thinking within and without the university at the very beginning. Our alumna Sigrid Dauks is the director of the university archive. Along with her team, she not only registers and catalogs the current documents that arrive perpetually, the team conducts research as well. That way, the project ‘Oral History’ has been initiated, in which witnesses answer questions on the history of the university. “History is always lived and experienced. With the new project, we want to include the perspective of the involved parties in the research of our university and add to the differentiated look,” archive director Dauks said. Selected results will be presented in the year of the anniversary.

The alumni association is looking for a team of volunteers that can help prepare archival documents, which are considered relevant to the history by the alumni and should be made open to the public.
