Faculty-related information
Here you can find some brief information specifically concerning the areas of teaching and education in Faculty 11. Select from the following topics if you are registered on a study program in Faculty 11 and are planning a stay abroad:

  • Outgoings – studying abroad, if you have come to the University of Bremen as a guest student from a foreign university and wish to undertake
  • Incomings – studying in Bremen, if you are a member of the teaching staff in Faculty 11 and are considering or planning to undertake a period teaching at a university abroad:
  • Mobility of teaching faculty, if you wish to invite a foreign guest researcher or educator to come to Bremen, i.e. to our Faculty or to your study program: Internationalization at home program.

Information for outgoings
In general, there are two different ways for students to study at a foreign university.

Coorperating universities
You may use one of the existing, contractually regulated university cooperations at university, department or degree program level. This means that you will study at one of our European or non-European partner universities. The University of Bremen has about 500 cooperation agreements with universities abroad. Faculty 11 has more than 30 cooperation agreements with foreign universities. It is important to distinguish between a) European and b) non-European partners.

A) European Cooperations
You can study at a European partner university as part of the Erasmus program. Erasmus contracts are generally established at faculty or degree program level. The list of existing Erasmus cooperations for study programs in Faculty 11 will give you an idea of which universities are suitable for you: students enrolled in the Psychology program can choose between universities that have an Erasmus agreement in Psychology. The same applies to students enrolled in the Public Health/Health Sciences and Nursing Science study programs

B) Non-European Coorperations
If you choose to study at a non-European university, please select one of the contractual university cooperations. These can be found in the list of non-European university cooperation agreements on the University?s central website. These cooperation agreements can be established at university level. In most cases students from all faculties and study programs are eligible to apply. In addition, there are agreements with non-European universities at faculty level, where students from these faculties are given priority during the application process. At the University of Bremen, students are selected by the designated contact person responsible for the cooperation, to whom you must apply, even if you belong to a different faculty. Below, you will find a list of non-European universities that cooperate with Faculty 11 (Contact person: Prof. Dr. Melanie B?ckmann) and students of our faculty will therefore be given priority.

How to apply
If you wish to study at a partner university (in Europe or worldwide), you must submit your application to the Erasmus Officer or contact person at your home faculty, who is also responsible for the selection process.

Freemover worldwide
The Freemover program is another possibility to study at a university with which there are no cooperation agreements. In this case you are completely free to choose the university of your choice and apply directly as a Free Mover. Generally, you will need to submit references from your home university with your application. To receive those, please contact a trusted lecturer of your choice or – as student of Faculty 11 – Prof. Dr. Melanie B?ckmann. Further information about the Free Mover Program can also be found on the central website of the University of Bremen.

Language skills

Regardless of which university or cooperation program you choose, you will need proof of sufficient language skills in the language of instruction. This must always be provided in the form of certificates or diplomas as part of your application documents.

You should only consider applying to universities, whose language of instruction you speak and understand well enough to be able to pass examinations upon arrival. The language of instruction is usually the same as the national language.

Some universities (e.g. in Scandinavia) offer courses in English, therefore you will need to provide an English language certificate. It is strongly recommended that you start researching languages and languages courses well in advance o your stay abroad.

Recognition of credits
The recognition of credit points earned abroad is another issue that you should consider and clarify before choosing a foreign university. It has to be ensured that modules studied abroad are recognisedrecognized as equivalent to your studies “at home”, so that you don?t lose any study time after your return. However, you don’t necessarily have to choose courses/modules that are exactly the same as those you would study at home.

The Internationalization/Erasmus Officer in charge of your study program will give you detailed information about everything you need to know before your stay abroad.

Do not hesitate to contact them as soon as you have thought about the aspects mentioned above, and maybe you have already found/selected the university in question that offers suitable courses for your studies.
