From 2013 to 2015 Rahat Imran did a comparative study in film studies focussing on gender- and human rights aspects as well as cineastic activism and resistence of muslim filmmakers in contemporary Pakistan, Iran and Afghanistan based on religious fundamentalism in these countries. The interdisciplinary research project combined studies in film, feminism, religion, cross-cultural communication. From 2004 to 2013 Dr. Imran was research associate and lecturer at Simon Fraser University in British Columbia (Canada) : School of Communication; Department of Women, Sexuality and Gender Studies; Centre for Online and Distance Education (CODE); School for the Contemporary Arts; and the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. From 1995 to 2003 she worked as a free-lance Editors for Oxford University Press in Islamabad (Pakistan) and the Simon Fraser University. From 1986 to 1995 she worked at as a journalist with several english speaking newspaper in Pakistan. Moreover she has been organizing several international film festivals in Vancouver (Canada).
