Since April 2020, Tobias Wendler has been working as a postdoc in the research group "Innovation and Structural Economics" (Prof. Dr. Jutta Günther) at the University of Bremen. In the working group, he leads the research area "Sustainability, Energy and Environmental Innovations". He is currently on a research stay at Tilburg University under a Walter Benjamin Fellowship of the German Research Foundation (DFG).
His research focus is on quantitative empirical research on innovation and sustainability. A particular focus is on the role of green technological change and the relevance of institutional and policy frameworks in the context of sustainable development. Ongoing projects deal, for example, with the effects of green innovation on labor productivity, the impact of climate policy measures on employment, or the determinants of green innovation.
In his dissertation, he investigated the effects of environmental innovations on the mitigation of greenhouse gases and the conservation of natural resources, as well as the relevance of societal and policy frameworks for the adoption of environmental innovations by firms. Previously, he studied economics at the University of Bremen (B.Sc. 2015) and subsequently completed an internship at a business consultancy. From October 2016 to March 2020, he worked as a research assistant (PhD student) in the research group "Innovation and Structural Economics" (Prof. Dr. Jutta Günther). Between April 2020 and June 2022, he was involved in the establishment of the Bremen Research Center for Energy Systems (BEST) as a coordinator, under the direction of Prof. Dr. Johanna Myrzik.
