The Harmless Charge: A Battery Safe Enough to Eat

Scientist Lucia Sorrill performed at Science goes PUBlic in the Bremen Quarter on April 10, 2025 and presented battery research at the University of Bremen.

The good old Stilo battery: who doesn't know it, either in AA or AAA format. It powers flashlights, remote controls or phones. We love them, we use them, and then: we have to bring them to recycling.

This can be annoying, explains scientist Lucia Sorrill. At Science goes PUBlic on April 10, 2025, sheexplained to the pub audience in the Bremen quarter why and how she is researching different batteries at the University of Bremen.

The problem: most batteries use zinc. This makes them cheap and safe, but unfortunately only for single use. Lucia Sorrill is researching how to produce a battery that is cheap, safe but also rechargeable and ecofriendly.
