Working group on spatial planning and management for pandemic-resilient cities
Description
Crisis resilience in pandemics and other emergencies, as well as preventive health protection, are important issues for sustainable and transformative spatial development. It is important to draw conclusions for future planning from the extensive international experience gained during the COVID-19 pandemic and to communicate these conclusions. Spatial inequalities play an important role in health-related and socially equitable spatial development, as the effects of pandemics vary for different social groups in different sub-regions. In addition, the accessibility and usability of green spaces close to home were important for the everyday lives of city dwellers during the COVID-19 pandemic. The pandemic resilience of urban areas and national health systems are mutually dependent: in order to counter future pandemics, the working group aims to bring together spatial knowledge, reflect on it with findings from the Leibniz Lab Pandemic Preparedness, and operationalize and apply it for planning practice.
The Leibniz Lab Pandemic Preparedness brings together outstanding interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary research from 41 Leibniz Institutes. The overarching goal is to pool research from a wide range of disciplines in order to prepare for, prevent, and respond to future pandemics. The knowledge gained will be made available to political decision-makers in the form of evidence-based recommendations for action.
