Opening of the Structured Doctoral Program in Health Sciences

Around 50 guests celebrated the launch of the new Structured Doctoral Program in Health Sciences at the University of Bremen on January 14, 2026.

The opening ceremony began with welcome addresses by high-ranking representatives of the University of Bremen and Bremen's science policy makers. Dr. Mandy Boehnke, Vice President for International Affairs, Academic Qualification, and Diversity, Prof. Dr. Anna F?rster as a member of the University of Bremen's Research Commission, and Kay Wenzel, Head of the Department of Higher Education and Research at the Senator for Environment, Climate, and Science, welcomed the guests. They emphasized the significance of the program as a foundation for the careers of the participating doctoral researchers, but also for Bremen as a center of scientific excellence, as it further promotes interdisciplinary research and networking within Bremen's health sciences.

Subsequently, the program speakers Prof. Dr. Ansgar Gerhardus and Prof. Dr. Birte Berger-H?ger, together with coordinator Fabienne Schnepf - all from the Institute of Public Health and Nursing Research IPP -  introduced the new doctoral program and provided an overview of its objectives and structure. A particular highlight of the event was the presentation by the doctoral researchers, who offered insights into the diversity of their group, disciplines, and research projects.

Following the official program, participants had the opportunity for personal exchange during a reception with drinks and finger food.

The event marked an important milestone for the program as well as for the University of Bremen's research focus area in Health Sciences, and provided the doctoral researchers from the disciplines of Public Health, Nursing Care, Sports Science, and Psychology with a celebratory framework for starting their academic careers in the structured doctoral program.
