The Christa and Manfred Fuchs Endowed Chair of Space Technology is staffed in cooperation with the DLR Institute of Space Systems. In the field of Space Technology, space missions on satellites, the ISS or suborbital rockets are promoted. In early stages of the missions, this includes aspects of technological, programmatic and scientific conception as well as technology development. A focus here is placed on measurement of space, time and frequency as well as acceleration with instruments based on quantum technologies. In more advanced missions, the manufacture, integration and verification of scientific payload are added. Main focus of the space missions investigated in the field of Space Technology is placed on earth observation as well as navigation, using time and acceleration metrology and also on tests of the fundamentals of physics, in particular special as well as general relativity and quantum mechanics.
Together with the research field of Fluid Mechanics as well as of Space Sciences, the focal point of research in Astronautics forms the Center for Applied Space Technology and Microgravity (ZARM). ZARM has established itself worldwide as a highly competent partner for space research and is regarded as a trainer of particularly qualified young researchers.
