PD Dagmar Bechtloff verbrachte ihre Schulzeit in Deutschland und Indien. Im Anschluss an das Abitur in Hamburg studierte sie an der dortigen Universit?t Politische Wissenschaften, Geschichte sowie Altamrikanistik.
Nach Abschluss des Studiums promovierte sie zu einem Thema der Kolonialgeschichte Mexikos. Die Dissertation über Religion zwischen Wirtschaft und Politik in einer interkulturellen Gesellschaft. Bruderschaften in Michoacán/Mexiko wurde 1992 mit der Promotion zum Dr. phil. In Hamburg bei Horst Pietschmann abgeschlossen.
1988 begann sie an Projekten des Colegio Mexiquense, Zinacantepec/Mexiko mitzuarbeitem. In den Heimaturlauben gab sie Blockseminare an den Universit?ten Hamburg und Bremen.
Mit einem Postdoc-Stpendium der Alexander von Humboldt-Stiftung verwirklichte sie 1994/95 ein eigenes Forschungsvorhaben zu Religion, Zivilisations- und Techniktransfers im Rahmen europ?ischer Expansionsbestrebungen nach ?bersee (17. und 19. Jahrhundert) auf Madagaskar.
Nach der Rückkehr erhielt sie eine Assistentenstelle bei Dieter H?germann, wo sie sich 1999 habilitierte. Die venia legendi für ?Neuere, neueste Geschichte und vergleichende ?berseegeschichte“ wurde ihr 2000 erteilt. Seither nimmt sie Vertretungs- und Gastdozenturen/professuren an zahlreichen Universit?ten Mexikos, Deutschlands und der Schweiz wahr.
