University of Bremen Signs Cooperation Agreement with Sophie Drinker Institute

The Research Centre for Historical Music Education at the University of Bremen’s Institute of Musicology and Music Education has signed a cooperation agreement with the Sophie Drinker Institute (SDI). This formalizes the existing collaborative work in research, teaching, and academic qualification.

Specifically, Prof. Dr. Freia Hoffmann from the Sophie Drinker Institute (SDI) in Bremen and Prof. Dr. Alexander J. Cvetko from the University of Bremen (field of music education) are working closely together, particularly in the area of historical music education. The SDI contributes its expertise through lecture events, publications, and project-related collaborations, among other things. The University of Bremen, in turn, offers research assistants at the institute support with qualification pursuits such as doctorates or habilitations.

Joint Teaching Activities

Joint activities are also possible in teaching. For example, members of the SDI can take on teaching roles at the university or joint courses can be held at the SDI, an old 19th-century merchant's villa.

In addition, both partners will grant each other mutual access to their research institutes and resources as far as is possible. The aim is to make use of synergies and create new impulses for research and teaching. Thanks to the agreement, the proven cooperation between the two institutions now has a solid foundation for future projects.

The signing of the cooperation agreement took place during the symposium celebrating the 80th birthday of the SDI's founder, Freia Hoffmann. In recognition of the cooperation that is already being practiced, the President of the University of Bremen, Prof. Dr. Jutta Günther, personally carried out the signing.

About the Sophie Drinker Institute

The Sophie Drinker Institute was founded in 2001 as an independent research facility. In the first years of its existence, it specialized in musicology and gender studies, but has since expanded its scope to include, for example, cultural-historical aspects of music historiography and pedagogical perspectives. After completing the “European Female Instrumentalists of the 18th and 19th Centuries” online encyclopedia (approximately 750 articles), the SDI spent several years studying the history of German-language conservatories in the 19th century. The three-volume handbook on this topic was published by Laaber Verlag in 2021. The SDI publishes series of writings, collects and catalogs literature, particularly on musicology and gender research, and maintains a comprehensive library that includes books and magazines, scores, and audio recordings. This library is also located in the SDI's villa and is open to the public.
