Research Profile
Young, Keen to Experiment, Strong in Research
The University of Bremen is a young, medium-sized research university and one of the world's top 50 young universities. The university carries out top-level research, both in interdisciplinary research networks and in an individual manner. Together with the local research institutes and cooperation partners, it constitutes the leading research hub in northwest Germany.
The university is a top performer in its five high-profile areas. In these areas, Bremen's researchers are looking for answers to the future questions of today's societies: The oceans and the global climate, the future of industrial production, the social conflicts of modern welfare states, the interfaces of digital technology and humans, and justice in healthcare.
The university’s high-profile areas are built on a broad spectrum of subjects, which are preserved in their diversity so that new links and research questions can emerge.
Close Cooperation within the Region
Cooperation is inseparable from science. In our region in particular, close and trusting cooperation creates new synergies in research, development, and science transfer. The university therefore maintains close contact with local research institutes and has founded the U Bremen Research Alliance, which brings together the eleven non-university research institutions located in and financed by the State of Bremen.
Great Success in Third-Party Funding Acquisition
A particular strength of the University of Bremen is its great success in the acquisition of third-party funds, both in individual as well as in collaborative research. The greater part of such funding comes from the German Research Foundation (DFG). In addition to the MARUM Cluster of Excellence, the University of Bremen is currently involved in seven Collaborative Research Centers and several DFG Research Units and DFG Priority Programs.
Bremen is also successful in the funding lines of the European Union. In addition to various ERC grants, numerous projects in the field of collaborative research, research infrastructures, and Marie Curie mobility measures have been acquired.
The University is also the home of various science prizewinners; among others, several Leibniz Prizes have already been granted to the University of Bremen.
Talent Support as a Strategic Goal
The targeted support of young talent, unlocking potential, and enabling early independence are key objectives pursued by the University of Bremen. We support our academics in DFG Research Training Groups, numerous Junior Research Groups, as well as through doctoral programs, in cooperation with non-university research institutions - among other ways. With BYRD - Bremen Early Career Researcher Development, the University of Bremen has a graduate center that systematically supports researchers at all career levels.
