First Year Students
Applying for the first semester
If you are applying as a first-year student for the winter semester, you have to register on two platforms:
? To apply, you need an applicant identification number (BID) and an applicant authentication number (BAN). You can find the BID and BAN in your Hochschulstart account in the ¡°My Data¡± tab.
? You apply for a place at the University of Bremen via the moin application portal. As a first-year student, you can submit up to 12 applications there.
? No Hochschulstart account is required for free enrollment in the winter semester (September 1-15). You can only submit one application.
? You also do not need a Hochschulstart account to apply for the summer semester; instead, you only need to register on the University of Bremen application portal (moin). You can only submit one application for the summer semester.
? In addition to personal data, you must also enter information in your application about your university entrance qualification, previous periods of study, any services you may have performed, and, if applicable, other requirements for your desired course of study. If you receive a place at university and accept it, the paper documents do not have to be submitted until enrollment.
Changing University or Subject
Applying for a higher semester
Anyone who has already been enrolled in a degree program (subject + degree) for at least one semester or who has transferrable credits from another degree program is considered to have ¡°advanced¡± and cannot apply as a first-year student, but applies for a higher semester. Those who are already enrolled in a bachelor's program with several subjects and wish to change one of the subjects must apply as first-year students.
Admission Procedure / NC
Restricted and open admission programs
For some programs, the University of Bremen expects more applications than there are places available. Therefore, these programs are subject to restricted admission and not all applicants can receive a place.
? In open-admission subjects, all applicants who submit an application by the deadline and meet the admission requirements will be admitted.
? How study places in admission-restricted subjects are awarded is explained in detail on the page about the procedure for awarding study places ("NC procedure").
From the winter semester 2024/25, the University of Bremen will take into account not only the average grade of the higher education entrance qualification, e.g. the Abitur, but also the result of the nationwide study aptitude test BaPsy-DGPs in the admission procedure for the 1st semester of the admission-restricted Bachelor's degree program in Psychology. Taking the test is voluntary and is not a requirement for admission. The test costs €100. The registration deadline for the test is February 15th.
Program-specific Requirements
Many degree programs have additional requirements, in addition to the higher education entrance qualification, that must be met in order to do well in the program. Depending on the subject, these may be, for example, certain language skills or a completed internship. Check in good time before you apply whether you already meet these so-called program-specific requirements (in German "ssv") for your desired degree program or whether you still need to do something for them.
moreDocuments for Enrollment
If you are admitted, you will be notified by email. You can then download your letter of admission from the application portal (moin). The letter of admission will tell you what you need to do to enroll. You can find some information here in advance:
You will only need to submit the following documents by post or in person in paper form to the Student Secretariat if you are admitted and register for a course. You will usually have 7 days to do this:
- signed declaration of acceptance of the study place
- A simple copy of your university entrance qualification (you can find a list of sample certificates here). Please note: We reserve the right to request the original certificate at any time to verify its authenticity.
- Digital proof of health insurance
- If applicable, proof of course-specific prerequisites (e.g. language certificates)
? To enroll, you must also transfer the semester fee.
Advanced students must additionally submit the following documents:
- Enrolment certificate from a different university from the last semester, stating the subjects and number of semesters of study
- Proof of academic achievement from previous studies (simple copy)
- If you were enrolled at a different university in the immediately preceding semester: certificate of exmatriculation
If you obtained your higher education entrance qualification in a country outside of Germany, you must also submit the following documents:
- German translation (simple copy, must be issued by a sworn translation agency/interpreter in Germany)
- Proof of sufficient knowledge of German (simple copy)
? Officially certified copies are not required for enrollment.
Documents issued in English do not need to be translated.
Studying without A-levels
You don't have A-levels but would still like to study at the University of Bremen? You have a special professional qualification (master craftsman, training as a nursery school teacher, training with several years of professional experience or similar)? You have a three-year training program? Find out more on our website about studying without A-levels.
Second Degree
Applicants with a completed university degree who wish to take up a new undergraduate degree (Bachelor's or First State Examination in Law) are referred to as ¡°second degree applicants¡±.
moreDouble Enrollment
If you would like to earn another degree at the University of Bremen while continuing your current program, the examination board of your current degree program must certify that double enrollment is reasonable from a subject-specific point of view. This is only possible for subjects without admission restrictions via an online application and is only recommended from the second semester onward.
You can download the application for dual enrollment as a pdf document (in German).
It is not possible to be enrolled at multiple universities at the same time. However, it is possible to participate in courses and take exams at multiple universities as a non-matriculated student.
55 Years or Older
Applicants who have reached the age of 55 by the application deadline may only participate in the admissions procedure for restricted-admission subjects if there are serious academic or professional reasons for their studying, taking into account their personal situation. After we receive your online application, you will be asked by email to submit a written statement explaining your situation, along with any supporting documents.
Returning your University Place
If you wish to return your university place, please fill out the form for returning a university place by the start of lectures. After lectures have started, please use the application for exmatriculation (to be found under Data & Applications in the moin portal).
If you have already transferred the semester fee, you will find information on how to get a refund under Re-registration and semester fee.
