The professorship is positioned at the interface of business studies, industrial engineering and management information systems, with a focus on digital logistics management and a complementary methodological emphasis on business data analytics. It centers on the management and steering of internal and external logistics processes and systems as well as the conceptualization of human-centric and intelligent digital logistics solutions. This is achieved specifically by data-based empirical methods, integrating qualitative and quantitative analysis approaches. Key elements and topics include, for example, Industry 4.0, the Internet of Things, automation and robotics, artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, blockchain, platform economy, last mile delivery, coordination of distributed value chains, and social sustainability.

 

In addition, a high-level expertise in scientific methods regarding empirical and data-based analytical approaches (qualitative and quantitative) is required. This includes, in particular, expertise in modern AI technologies and methods such as big data analytics and machine learning. The candidate should be able to acquire, build and analyze large-scale empirical datasets to provide decision support and solutions for logistics management challenges, while considering real-world conditions and constraints.

 

The professorship is expected to represent the field of logistics in research and teaching, further develop it, and contribute to the international academic profile of the faculty. Disciplinary and interdisciplinary collaboration, as well as contributions to the development of relevant groups in research, teaching, and knowledge transfer, are of great importance. The profile of the professorship offers numerous opportunities for collaboration—both within the faculty (such as with management information systems or the areas of controlling and finance) and within the University of Bremen (such as with the faculties of mathematics/informatics and production engineering, or within the research and transfer focus of logistics/Bremen Research Cluster for Dynamics in Logistics, as well as the Data Science Center). Participation in relevant faculty-related and university research projects, as well as initiatives to attract research-oriented third-party funding, is expected.

 

The Faculty of Business Studies and Economics is committed to providing good study conditions through high-quality teaching. The candidate’s responsibilities include offering courses with a teaching load of 9 LVS per semester in the core Bachelor’s and Master’s degree programs as well as the cooperative degree programs of the faculty (in particular Management and Production Engineering, Information Systems and Management as well as Management Information Systems). The candidate is expected to contribute to the further development of the faculty’s existing degree programs, in particular by designing and offering modules in the profile area of General Management and Logistics of the faculty’s new Bachelor’s degree program in Business Studies. The ability to offer courses in German and English, as well as the willingness to undergo further training in higher education and to participate in the academic self-administration of the faculty are expected.

 

To be considered for the professorship, the faculty expects publications in top-tier journals, relevant teaching experience and initial experience in acquiring research-oriented third-party funding. A pronounced willingness to intensively promote doctoral and early career researchers of the faculty is also a prerequisite. In particular, active participation in the Diginomics Research Group is considered an essential contribution.

Requirements

Applicants are required to hold a university degree with a relevant focus, a PhD degree in their respective fields, further scientific achievements in the field to warrant the appointment as professor (such as a higher doctorate, successful evaluations at the assistant professor stage or a substantial publication record), pedagogical aptitude and didactical engagement. The appointment follows the regulations of §§ 18 and 18a BremHG as well as §116 BremBG.
