The Institute of Environmental Physics (IUP) at the University of Bremen is looking at the earliest possible date for a

Postdoctoral Research Scientist (f/m/d)
in the area of Physical Oceanography

German federal pay scale E 13 TV-L (100 %) limited for 3 years (according to § 2 WissZeitVG)

for the research topic

Upwelling and temperature variability in the Northeastern Tropical Atlantic

The position is suitable for part-time work.

Job description

Research topic and tasks

Eastern boundary upwelling systems in the tropical-subtropical Oceans are regions with high biological productivity and fish abundance. At the same time, they are heavily impacted by climate change in terms of warming, deoxygenation and acidification. These upwelling regions are also subject to strong temperature variability on seasonal to decadal time scale, manifested e.g. in marine heat waves.

The position is located in the Physical Oceanography group at the Institute of Environmental Physics (IUP) at the University of Bremen. The Postdoctoral researcher will conduct independent research on the topic of “Upwelling and temperature variability in the Northeastern Tropical Atlantic” and publish the results in scientific peer-reviewed journals. Scientific questions to be addressed include the relation between sea surface temperature and upwelling variability as well as the investigation of additional processes contributing to near surface temperature variations off Mauritania. These processes are to be investigated based on a variety of data sets such as direct observations and reanalysis products and may include the collection of additional new data.

Tasks additionally include:

  • Academic assistance in teaching, amounting to 4 SWS (hours per semester week) including the transfer of expertise and practical skills, as well as instruction in the application of scientific methods in the Bachelor’s and Master’s programs according to the applicable LVNV), and teaching export (= subject-specific teaching for other departments)
  • Scientific support in research, participation in research projects, and in the publication of scientific data, participation in research cruises
  • Other university duties, such as participation in academic self-administration.

Requirements

Requirements:

  • A completed academic university degree (Master/University Diploma) in Physical Oceanography, Physics, or in related field
  • PhD in Physical Oceanography or a closely related field (Also candidates that are about to complete their doctorate can apply. Please note that a PhD certificate is strictly necessary for employment.)
  • Proficiency in scientific programming (preferably Python and/or Matlab)
  • Experience in the analysis of large data sets
  • Background in observational physical oceanography
  • Proficiency in oral and written English

The Institute of Environmental Physics offers a good working atmosphere, direct involvement in international research and attractive facilities.
