The Master's degree programme in Clinical Psychology and Psychotherapy aims to give students in-depth knowledge and skills in the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of mental disorders. It is a prerequisite for the state examination for a licence to practise as a psychotherapist, which students can take after successfully completing the Master's degree.
The degree programme comprises four semesters with a total of 120 CP and is recognised under professional law.
There are 30 study places available each year. Admission to the degree programme is restricted.
For inclusion in a master's degree is the completion of studies at the Bachelor's level requirement.

The focus of the study programme in Clinical Psychology and Psychotherapy is on the application of evidence-based psychotherapeutic methods and the development of clinical-practical skills. Students receive in-depth training in various psychotherapeutic approaches; behavioural therapy, psychodynamic methods and systemic therapy. In the sense of a scientist-practitioner model, the programme strives for a close link between scientific work and clinical-psychological practice. Practical experience is gained by working in university outpatient clinics or co-operating clinical facilities, enabling students to gain extensive professional experience during their studies.
In-depth content is taught in areas such as special disorders and procedures, psychological diagnostics and assessment, behavioural genetics and a basic psychological subject (e.g. developmental psychology). At the same time, students acquire advanced knowledge of statistical methods, which prepares them for writing an empirical Master's thesis and helps them to critically assess scientific studies and responsibly integrate their results into their own psychotherapeutic work. Furthermore, students deal with the characteristics of the healthcare system with special consideration of mental disorders with disease value, are familiar with the professional and socio-legal foundations necessary for working in the healthcare system, including institutional and structural framework conditions, and are trained in quality assurance and quality management to improve psychotherapeutic care.
In the context of self-reflection, students hone their ability to perceive and regulate their own emotions, cognitions, motives and behaviour in the therapeutic process and at the same time recognise the limits of their own psychotherapeutic actions.
The Master's thesis should demonstrate that students are able to independently work on and present a research task using scientific methods. Upon successful completion of the study programme, the degree of Master of Science (M.Sc.) is awarded.

Professional qualification activity 2 prepares students for the non-university components in practice, in which they independently carry out and use psychotherapeutic counselling, basic techniques and psychoeducational measures, for example. The practical phase within the framework of the professional qualification activity 3 then takes place in co-operation clinics and outpatient clinics in Bremen or the surrounding area as well as in the Psychotherapeutic Outpatient Clinic across the Lifespan (PULS) at the University of Bremen.
In this degree programme, students acquire all the specific and interdisciplinary competences, skills and knowledge required by the Psych-ThApprO. The degree programme prepares students for a variety of fields of activity in psychology, including research, counselling, clinical work, teaching, health promotion and psychological services. Graduates are qualified for professional practice as psychotherapists as well as in the broader field of clinical psychology (including areas such as psychosomatics, neuropsychology, rehabilitation psychology, psycho-oncology and gerontopsychology) in research and clinical practice. Career opportunities include working in institutional settings as well as the option of running your own practice. In order to work as a psychotherapist and to be recognised under social law, further training will be required following the licence to practise, which takes place after graduation. As part of this further training, a specific age range (children and adolescents or adults) and a psychotherapy method will be defined.
