Open Science at the University of Bremen
Sharing Our Knowledge
The goal of open science is to make research processes and their results freely accessible to everyone. Research methods, data, software, and scientific articles should be made publicly available. This ensures that scientific work is traceable and reproducible, and open to further development.
The overarching principle is: as open as possible, as closed as necessary, while taking into
account all relevant legal framework conditions such as security, data protection, and privacy.
Open Science helps to reduce skepticism toward scientific research and makes the acquisition of knowledge more transparent and beneficial to the general public.
Open Science Policy of the University of Bremen
The University of Bremen aims to establish open science as a guiding principle in all aspects of research, teaching, and transfer, guided by the principles of responsible science. It encourages its scientists to implement open science principles in order to ensure the long-term availability and practical usability of scientific results for actors within and outside of science.
This fundamental stance of the university is outlined in the Open Science Policy adopted by the Academic Senate. It provides guidance to employees and offers recommendations and assistance in individual areas of open science.
Open Science Advisory Board
The Open Science Advisory Board supports and advises on the strategic development of open science at the University of Bremen. It is composed of experts from central and decentralized units. The Vice President for Research and Transfer serves as chair.

Open Access
Open publishing – fostering impact - by making research results openly accessible, they gain greater visibility, are used more widely, and promote scholarly exchange. The University of Bremen, together with the State and University Library Bremen (SuUB), is dedicated to ensuring open access to knowledge and encourages all researchers to publish their work openly whenever possible.

Open Data
Research data generated at the University of Bremen should be made available in accordance with the FAIR principles (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable), in order to contribute to a sustainable scientific system.

Open Research Infrastructures
Access to research infrastructures (such as archives, equipment, and data infrastructures) promotes innovative research and teaching, strengthens collaboration, and contributes to the advancement of scientific methods. Accordingly, physical and digital infrastruc-tures at the University of Bremen should be made visible and, where possible, accessible.

Open Transfer & Society
Open science can only be made possible through an inclusive scientific culture. The University of Bremen is committed to facilitating access to scientific knowledge for social actors and promoting inclusive participation in scientific processes. This is achieved, for example, by promoting data literacy, citizen science initiatives, and open innovation.

Data Community Club
Stronger together in handling research data: Every two months, data stewards, data scientists, data champions, and data enthusiasts from all scientific disciplines come together as part of the DataNord data competence center to exchange ideas, learn from each other, grow together, and promote advanced, data-driven research.
moreBremen Open Science Initiative (BOSI)
The Bremen Open Science Initiative (BOSI) at Faculty 11 (Human and Health Sciences) supports researchers and students of the faculty in implementing open science practices. Interested parties from all status groups are welcome to participate. BOSI currently meets about once per semester.
moreData Science Center Member Network
The university’s Data Science Center (DSC) brings together researchers from all faculties to advance data-based research beyond disciplinary boundaries. Open data provides the foundation for transparent, reusable, and collaborative research. Researchers from all fields are warmly invited to contribute their expertise and become part of the DSC network.
moreResearch Data Working Group of the UBRA
The Research Data Working Group of the U Bremen Research Alliance strategically bundles the research data management (RDM) and data science activities of its member institutions. At the same time, it connects the NFDI consortia of the region and develops synergies for joint initiatives. The network also serves as a central platform for cooperation and coordination.
